Zusammenfassung

Bei Sportlern ist die Prävalenz der Nahrungsergänzungsmitteleinnahme mit 67–90 % höher als in der Gesamtbevölkerung (40 %). Aufgrund der erhöhten Stoffwechselrate von Sportlern ist ein Mehrbedarf an B-Vitaminen und Antioxidanzien anzunehmen, belegt ist dies jedoch nicht. Bei einigen Mineralstoffen (z. B. Natrium, Eisen) ist ein erhöhter Verlust zu beobachten. Ein sportbedingter Mehrbedarf lässt sich jedoch nicht quantifizieren und sportartspezifische Zufuhrempfehlungen sind nicht verfügbar. Obwohl Defizite die Gesundheit und Leistungsfähigkeit von Athleten beeinflussen können, ist eine gründliche Nutzen-Risiko-Analyse einer Supplementierung erforderlich. Risiken wie Überdosierungen oder dopingrelevante Verunreinigungen sind durch eine bedarfsangepasste, ausgewogene Ernährung vermeidbar.
