Steven Young, MD, PhD, FACOG is an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology in the division of reproductive endocrinology and infertility at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. He also serves as director of the clinical fellowship training program and of divisional education and research efforts.

Dr. Young is a recognized expert in translational and basic aspects of human endometrial function, with interests in embryo implantation, endometriosis, progesterone action, and immunological tolerance of the fetus. His current work is focused on understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms by which progesterone acts to alter the endometrial function of normal women and those with apparent progesterone resistance associated with endometriosis. This work has suggested multiple new targets for the development of novel diagnostic tests and therapy for endometriosis, a disease for which current diagnostic and therapeutic options are highly limited, often only moderately effective, and lead to undesired side-effects.

Dr. Young's career has taken an uncommon path in that he remains highly active in all three aspects of academic medicine: clinical care, education, and scientific research. He maintains an active clinical practice, treating the full breadth of reproductive endocrine and infertility disorders. He directs an NIH-funded laboratory and participates in the NIH-sponsored Reproductive Medicine Network. He also directs the fellowship training program and the subspecialty education of residents.

Dr. Young has published over 60 original research and review articles and is an inventor on multiple patents. He has garnered grant support from the National Institutes of Health for multiple projects and has served on multiple study sections to review grant applications. He also reviews manuscripts for multiple general, specialty and subspecialty journals.

Dr. Young has served as the Vice-President and President of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine ASRM Reproductive Immunology Special Interest Group (RISIG) and directed a successful post-graduate course on innate immunity in the reproductive tract. He has frequently served the ASRM and Society for Gynecologic Investigation as session chair, roundtable speaker, poster judge, and/or invited postgraduate course or symposium speaker at the annual meetings.
