Requiring no chromatography, Direct Analysis in Real Time (DART)-mass spectrometric analysis was performed on ethanolic extracts of Glycyrrhiza spp. Characteristic mass spectra of G. uralensis, G. inflata, and G. glabra were obtained and compared. Positive ion DART-MS analysis of G. uralensis showed characteristic ions including m/z 313, 339 and 479, while analysis of G. inflata and G. glabra yielded distinctly different yet characteristic mass spectra. This work demonstrates an extremely beneficial application of DART-MS as a rapid technique to aid in the identification and distinction of plant species.
