Phloroglucinols display interesting biological activities such as antiproliferative, antidepressant and antibacterial. The occurrence of phloroglucinols is restricted to ferns of the Dryopteridaceae family. The aim of the present study was to identify new sources of bioactive phloroglucinols from Mexican ferns. The rhizomes hexanic extracts from Elahphoglossum erinnaceum and Dryopteris wallichiana showed IC50 values of 105 and 40 µg/ml for Monoamine Oxidase A inhibition (MAO-A), respectively. E. palaceum, Dennsraedta globulifera and D. wallichina displayed MIC values of 50 µg/ml against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923). For the antiproliferative activity against breast MCF-7 carcinoma, they showed the following IC50 values: Arachniodes denticulata showed10.27 µg/ml, E. paleaceum 11.06 µg/ml, and Polypodium plebeium 16.19 µg/ml. In addition E. erinnaceum displayed IC50 of 7.19 µg/ml for the prostate PC-3 carcinoma cell line, and 4.28 µg/ml for colon HF-6 line. High deshielded signals in the 1 H NMR spectra of some active hexanic crude extracts indicated the presence of dimeric structures of acylphloroglucinol derivatives with characteristic signals from -OH protons at δ 18.4, 16.1, 12.9 and 10.1, as well as the signals at δ 4.47(br. t) and 4.76 (br. s) corresponding to the prenyl groups.
