Summary

Anguraté, a herbal drug derived from Mentzelia species
Decoctions of Anguraté, whose roots and stems were in former times erroneously attributed to M. cordifolia and are nowadays assigned to Mentzelia scabra subsp. chilensis, have been used for a long time in folk medicine of Peru, amongst others, as a remedy for the treatment of gastric complaints. Since the 1950s Anguraté has been also available in Germany for the treatment of gastric and intestinal disorders. Studies have led amongst others to the identification of iridoids and phenolic compounds in Anguraté and to the confirmation of anti-inflammatory effects of its decoctions. In a few studies with an open label study design beneficial effects of the decoctions could be observed for patients suffering from gastric and duodenal ulcers, gastritis and heartburn.
