In a previous work, the ethanol extract of Centaurea aegyptiaca showed potential cytotoxic activities against cervix, colon, and breast carcinoma cell lines. However, the most potent cytotoxic effect was against liver and larynx carcinoma cell lines. The ethanol extract, after several chromatographic processes, afforded the guaianolide sesquiterpene lactone, 8α-hydroxy-11α,13-dihydrozaluzanin C. This compound showed a potential cytotoxic activity against larynx carcinoma cell line with IC50 of 25.57µM. Moreover, this compound may be responsible for the previously shown cytotoxic activity of Centaurea aegyptiaca ethanol extract against larynx carcinoma cell line.
