Evaluation of Bitterness-Masking Agents from Solidago canadensis (Canada Goldenrod)
In an in vitro screen of plants native to Ohio against the bitterness receptor hTAS2R31, one new labdane diterpenoid (1), and eight known compounds, including two labdane diterpenoids (2 and 3), three clerodane diterpenoids (4 – 6), an abietane diterpenoid (7), a flavonoid (8), and a triterpenoid (9), were isolated and identified from the chloroform-soluble extract of Solidago canadensis (Asteraceae). Among these compounds, 3-acetoxycopalic acid (2) was found to be the first member of the labdane diterpene class shown to have inhibitory activity against hTAS2R31 activation (IC50 = 8µM).
