Antibacterial Compounds from Atalantia monophylla Roots and Stems
A phytochemical investigation of the roots and stems of Atalantia monophylla led to the isolation and identification of sixteen known compounds including nine acridone alkaloids (1 – 9), six coumarins (10 – 15) and a limonoid (16). Their structures were elucidated through a series of 1D and 2D NMR experiments. Some isolated compounds were further evaluated for their antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Only compound 2 exhibited strong activity against Methicillin-resistant Staphyloccocus aureus SK1 and S. aureus with MIC values of 2 and 4 µg/mL, respectively.
