Phenolic Compounds Isolated from Dodonaea viscosa Growing in Egypt

The bioassay-guided fractionation of the 70% ethanolic extract of Dodonaea viscosa (Sapindaceae) growing in Egypt, resulted in the isolation of eight flavonoids (1 – 8). The structures of the isolated flavonoids were elucidated by using 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy as well as HRESIMS. All isolated compounds were evaluated for their antimalarial, antileishmanial, antifungal and antimicrobial activities. The isolated compounds were identified as: 5,7-dihydroxy flavanone “Pinocembrin” (1), 5-hydroxy-3,6,7,4'-tetramethoxy flavone (2), 5,7-dihydroxy-3,6,4'-trimethoxy flavone (3), 5,4'-dihydroxy-3,6,7-trimethoxy flavone “Penduletin” (4), 5,7,4'-trihydroxy-3,6-dimethoxy flavone (5), 5,7,4'-trihydroxy-3-methoxy flavone (6), 5,7,4'-trihydroxy-3'-(4hydroxy-3methylbutyl) 3,6-dimethoxyflavone “Aliarin” (7), 5,7-dihydroxy-3'-(4hydroxy-3methylbutyl) 3,6,4'-trimethoxyflavone (8). Compound (1) showed good antifungal activity against Cryptococcus neoformans with an IC50 value of 6.11 µg/mL.
