Summary

Is shiitake more than a delicacy?
Lentinula edodes, the shiitake mushroom, has a very long tradition in the East Asian traditional medicine. The mushrooms are cultivated increasingly also in the Western hemisphere. They are used as edible mushrooms and as »medicinal mushrooms« in the form of food supplements (nutraceuticals), too. In Japan the mushroom β-glucan lentinan is used as immunostimulating drug for adjuvant tumour treatment. Experimental studies show that the nucleoside derivative eritadenine is able to lower lipid and homocysteine levels. To qualify for European drug registration further and better clinical studies are necessary.
