Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the major cause of premature death in Europe,
even though CVD mortality has fallen considerably over recent decades. Importantly,
it is strongly connected to lifestyle habits, one reason why preventive strategies
are effective. While 50 % of the reductions seen in coronary heart disease (CHD) mortality
relate to changes in risk factors, 40 % relate to improved treatments. The aim of
this manuscript, which focuses on several important topics contained in the 2012 guidelines
from the Fifth Joint Task Force of the European Societies on Cardiovascular Disease
Prevention in Clinical Practice, is to give an update of the present knowledge in
preventive cardiology for physicians and other health care workers.
