Chemical composition of Cladonia sylvatica (L.) Hoffm.

Cladonia sylvatica (L.) Hoffm. has been used in traditional medicine for many years and was included in the Pharmacopeia monograph “Lichens” registered in USSR in 1973. Here it is recommended as the natural source of usnic acid to produce sodium usniate, an antibacterial remedy for external use to treat infected wounds, trophic ulcers and burns (PhA 42–766–73). Recently a renewed interest in usnic acid has been noticed.
