In the United States, cancer is the second common cause of death, which cost several billion dollars each year. Colchicine analogs have potential anticancer properties with significant regulatory effects on the progress of the tumor cell cycle. Plant-made colchicine is one of the high commodity bioactive alkaloid molecules. Gloriosa superba biosynthesizes high levels of colchicine. New anticancer mechanisms of colchicine dimers have been introduced as potential anticancer drug candidates. We have established a G. superba bioproduction technology which allows for scale-up in pilot-scale bioreactor to produce colchicine and its analogs for anticancer molecules production. I will present the preliminary bioprocess engineering results to produce G. superba-made anticancer molecules.
