Abstract

The risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia increases with rising life expectancy in most industrialised countries. Dementia is often associated with neuropsychiatric symptoms such as depression, anxiety or mood changes accompanied by irritability or restlessness. Neuropsychiatric symptoms can noticeably reduce a patient’s ability to lead an independent life and may place a considerable burden upon relatives and caregivers. A double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled, 24-week trial with 410 outpatients demonstrated the efficacy of a once-daily administration of 240 mg Ginkgo biloba extract EGb 761® in patients with mild to moderate dementia. Patients treated with Ginkgo biloba extract showed significantly greater improvements in relation to cognitive parameters and neuropsychiatric symptoms, as well as in their ability to cope with the demands of everyday life, than the placebo group. As a consequence, the distress experienced by caregivers was alleviated.
