The treatment of periodontitis is very complex and demands understanding of the disease, manual skills of the practitioner and ability of the dentist or dentalhygienist to motivate the patient for good oral hygiene.

The primary goal of periodontal therapy is to eliminate the inflammation and to arrest further periodontal tissue destruction. In order to prevent the results achieved after ”active“ periodontal therapy, the maintenance care should be initiated. Lifelong supportive periodontal therapy helps to keep the periodontal conditions stable and to support the patient in his oral hygiene. Hence, the recurrence of the disease can be prevented or, if occurred, diagnosed and treated on time.

This article describes how the risk for periodontal disease recurrence after active periodontal therapy is calculated. The Recall frequency is based on periodontal risk assessment. The organization and implementation of Recall appointment – examination, diagnosis, motivation of the patient, etc. – will be discussed.
