Effects of Pleurotus ostreatus and P. cystidiosus Mushrooms on Glycosylated Hemoglobin (HbA1c) Levels on Normal and Diabetic Male Wistar Rats.

An analytical interventional study was conducted to assess the effects of suspensions of freeze dried and powdered (SFDP) Pleurotus ostreatus (P. o), and P. cystidiosus (P. c), mushrooms on HbA1c levels on normal and diabetic Wistar rats. Normal and diabetic rats were divided into groups (n=6) viz; distilled water, SFDP P. o and P. c. another group of diabetic rats were assigned as Metformin. SFDP P. o and P. c (500mg/kg), metformin and water were administered repeatedly for six weeks at prefixed times in addition to their normal diet. At the end of the experimental period, whole blood was collected into heparinized vials for the estimation of HbA1c levels. The results were analyzed using 'Student's t test, analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by post hoc Dunnett's test using SPSS 17.

There was a statistically significant difference in HbA1c levels of P. o (p<0.01), P. c (p<0.001) and metformin (p<0.05) diabetic test groups when compared with the diabetic control group. The percentage reductions of HbA1c levels were 30%, 37% and 27% respectively. Further the effect is comparable with metformin (p>0.05). HbA1c levels of P. o and P. c in normal rats, were not significantly different when compared with normal control. These data suggest that P. o and P. c exert apparent control on the homeostasis of blood glucose in diabetic rats.
