Dioscorea cayenensis (Dioscoreaceae) is commonly known as yellow yam and has been used as a food and to treat burns and fever [1]. Two new monodesmosidic spirostane type steroid glycosides with a fatty ester linkage, progenin III-palmitate (1) and progenin III-linoleate (2) together with known spirostane monodesmosidic glycosides were isolated from the tubers of Dioscorea cayenensis and characterized using spectroscopic techniques and chemical methods.
