There is growing interest and demand in Europe for foreign traditional medicines including herbal drugs used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Public standards have to be established to guarantee consistent and reliable quality needed for a safe use of those herbal drugs. The European Pharmacopoeia Commission has installed a specific working party on the elaboration of monographs on herbal drugs used in Traditional Chinese Medicines.

The presentation will give an overview of the principles followed in the preparation of the Ph.Eur. monographs and exemplify the different types of reference standards linked to the monographs. An update on the elaboration process and the progress of work achieved by the TCM working party will be provided.
