Dental composite restorations can either be light-cured by means of a blue light-emitting diode (LED) or a conventional quartz tungsten halogen light. In many cases it is challenging or even impossible to place light-curing tip at an angle of 90 degrees on the surface of the resin composite, which is intended to be cured. As a consequence only a part of the polymerization light effectively reaches the filling.

The results of the present study reveal that the LED light-curing units (Celalux, VOCO; SmartLite PS, Dentsply DeTrey) are superior to the halogen lamp (Translux CL, Kulzer) if the tip of the unit is placed at angles between 90–30 degrees to the surface of the resin composite. Reasonable results of at least 2 mm polymerization depth could be achieved. If the orientation angle of the lamp had been < 30 degrees, the investigated depth of cure decreased significantly; using the halogen lamp, light-curing of the composite resin could not be realized under these conditions.
