Tiere leiden genauso unter Schmerzen wie Menschen. Allerdings ist es oft nicht so einfach, Schmerzen beim Tier sofort zu erkennen. Die Notwendigkeit einer erfolgreichen, dem aktuellen Zustand des Patienten angepassten Schmerztherapie ist in den letzten Jahren immer mehr in den Fokus gerückt. Dies hat zur Entwicklung und Zulassung einer Vielzahl von Analgetika geführt. Zu diesen Präparaten zählt auch das nichtsteroidale Antiphlogistikum (NSAID) Robenacoxib aus der Klasse der Coxibe.
