Genotype analysis, source tracing and control strategy of an outbreak of carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter Baumannii in a NICU
Aims: An outbreak of 17 cases of carbapenem-resistant acinetobacter baumannii in a neonate intensive care unit (NICU) was analyzed and evaluated. Methods: Samples were isolated from blood or sputum from the patients in the NICU, cultured by conventional techniques and automated system. Multiplex PCR was used to detect blaOXA-51-like, blaOXA-23-like, OXA-24, OXA-58 and Ambler class B carbapenemases. The genotype of the outbreak strains were identified by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). Results: BlaOXA-23 was detected in the isolates. 14 of the 17 isolates displayed similar genotype with the isolates from the other ward of the hospital including trauma ward, oncology ward and neurosurgery ward. The other 3 isolates displayed diferent characteristics. Conclusion: Carbapenem-resistant acinetobacter baumannii might be brought into the NICU from other ward, other unknown causes of the outbreak need further study to find out.
