Significance

1,1-Difluoroallenes 3 are efficiently prepared in a two-step protocol from commercially available 1,1,1-trifluoro-2-iodoethane (1). A previously developed route to these highly functional allenes has recently become non-viable, because the starting material (1,1-dibromo-2,2-difluoroethene) has been banned due to its ozone depleting potential.
