Summary

The use of anthracyclines, especially in combination with trastuzumab is limited by the cardiotoxicity. Over recent years, there has been resurgence in interest in mitochondrial biology, due mainly to a growing appreciation of the complexity and importance of the cellular mitochondrial network. Mitochondrial dysfunction is a common mechanism of chemotherapy induced cardiotoxicity. In this context the use of mitochondrial protectors such as L-carnitine, coenzyme Q10 und selenium can be useful to reduce the cardiotoxic side effects of chemotherapy.
