Der Gastrointestinaltrakt alter Hunde und Katzen ist kaum von altersabhängigen Erkrankungen betroffen. Typische altersbedingte degenerative Erscheinungen, wie sie z. B. bei Gelenken, Herzklappen oder Linsen zu finden sind, gibt es im Gastrointestinaltrakt nicht. Bei Hunden sind lediglich Änderungen in der gastrointestinalen Flora bekannt (Clostridien nehmen zu, Lactobacillus und Bacteroides nehmen ab). Bei Katzen liegen keine Daten vor.

Im Folgenden wird ein Überblick über Ernährungsbedürfnisse von Hunden und Katzen gegeben, die zwar alt, aber damit nicht zwangsläufig krank sind.
