The podocyte covers the glomerular basement membrane; it has an elaborate structure. Foot processes, directly attached to the glomerular basement membrane are connected by slit diaphragms. Mutations of cytoskeletal proteins, cytoskeleton–associated proteins, transcription factors – strongly expressed by podocytes – and mechanical or toxic injury of podocytes lead to gross proteinuria and several morphologically defined diseases, such as focal segmental glomerulosclerosis and minimal change glomerulopathy.
Key words
podocyte - foot processes - slit diaphragms - gross proteinuria - focal segmental glomerulosclerosis - minimal change glomerulopathy
