Summary

Constipation: are all anthraquinone laxatives equal?

For centuries, plants containing anthraquinones have been used as laxatives. Several studies on the pharmacological and clinical efficacy and tolerability performed in the last century provide scientific proof for a number of these plants. Senna – Cassia angustifolia – is the best investigated natural laxative; in contrast to other anthraquinone-containing plants, its toxicology has also been studied comprehensively. In fact, investigations on humans were carried out almost exclusively with senna.
