Significance

Photoreaction assisted by Mg²+-exchanged zeolite Y for the preparation of methyl ketones was described. Photoirradiation (Xe lamp, γ > 300 nm) of acetone in water was carried out with olefins (under nitrogen atmosphere in the presence of Mg²+-exchanged zeolite Y (MgY, 5 mg, containing 2.6 µmol Mg²+) to give the corresponding methyl ketones (63-85% yield, 6 examples). The addition of MgY to the photoreaction system accelerated the formation of methyl ketones.
