Significance

Mesoporous silica-supported Ru-NHC heterogeneous catalysts, RuBn and RuPr, were developed for alkene metathesis. The catalysts were prepared by i) co-hydrolysis and co-polymerization of 1a or 1b with Si(OEt)4 and Pluronic P123 (a structure-directing agent), ii) subsequent treatment of mesitylimidazole, iii) passivation of all residual alkoxy/silanol groups, and iv) installation of Ru species to afford the corresponding mesostructured catalysts RuBn and RuPr. When the metathesis of ethyl oleate was carried out with RuPr (0.01 mol%) at 40 ˚C for five hours, the conversion of ethyl oleate was 50% with an initial TOF of 65 min.
