Summary

Hearing was investigated in 23 patients with myotonic dystrophy, three with congenital myotonia (two sporadic muscular dystrophy (pelvic and shoulder-girdle type) and one with pseudomyotonia associated with hypothyroidism. Among the 23 patients with myotonic dystrophy and the five with progressive muscular dystrophy and the one with pseudomyotonia associated with hypothyroidism there was a loss in high-tone hearing which was greater than expected from age alone. This was not so in the three patients with congenital myotonia. The genesis of this type of hearing disturbance is unknown, but it is assumed that the disease process also involves the organ of Corti due to a disturbance at the level chemical energy availability.
