Abstract
Clinically used valve prostheses are still associated with several limitations. The
biological prostheses are limited due to their durability and mechanical valves need
permanent oral anticoagulation. Tissue engineering could become a capable tool to
create an „ideal” living heart valve with the potential to grow. This would be a matter
of particular interest especially in paediatric patients. This article gives a short
overview about current concepts, used cell types and clinical experiences with tissue
engineered heart valves.
