Summary

Fourteen aromatic constituents were isolated from a sample of Piper received from New Guinea. All could be identified:

α–Pyrones (kawa lactones): Desmethoxy–yangonin, yangonin, 11–methoxyyangonin, 11–methoxy–12–noryangonin, dihydrokawain, dihydromethysticin and methysticin.

Chalkones: Flavokawin B, pinostrobin chalkone, alpinetin chalkone.

Flavanones (possibly artifacts arising from genuine chalkones): Dihydrotectochrysin, dihydrooroxylin A, alpinetin.

These plants resemble Piper methysticum Forst, in their constituents. Morphology and biochemistry indicate that the plant sample investigated represents a new species of Piper, which is closely allied to Piper methysticum.
