Summary

For separation of khellin from other constituents of the fruit, alcoholic and petroleum ether extracts were applied on kiesel gel (G) plates and developed with solvent system ethyl acetate : benzene : water (50:75:50). This system proved to be effective in separation of khellin from visnagin, coumarins, glycosides, chlorophyll and other extraneous material.

A micro method for estimating the separated khellin is described, depending on eluting khellin whit 4 cc of hot distilled water, adding 5 cc of 20 N sulfuric acid and volume adjusted to 10 cc, the colour developed measured after 5 minutes at 420 [xm.

The reproducibility of the method was proved by confirming hundred percent elution of known quantities of authentic khellin.
