Summary

A micro–method is established for the determination of the poisonous principles of Ranunculus sceleratus L.; protoanemonin, ranunculin, as well as of anemonin. The method is based on the formation of 2,4–dinitrophenyl–hydrazone complex, which develops a red colour on addition of methanolic potassium hydroxide. The colour obeys Beer's law at concentrations of 2–14 μg/ml protoanemonin, and 1–7 μg/ml of anemonin.

The method is applicable in medicolegal analysis for the estimation of protoanemonin in cases of poisoning by the plant.

Determination of protoanemonin is also achieved even in the presence of anemonin.
