Abstract

The commercial sample of Eyebright was found, on macroscopical examination to consist of three microspecies of Euphrasia officinalis L., namely, E. confusa Pugsl., E. nemorosa (Pers.) Wallr. and E. pseudokerneri Pugsl. Phytochemical investigation of this material has revealed substances not previously reported, including tertiary alkaloids, choline, steam volatile bases and a complex volatile ,oil' fraction. The presence of aucubin, caffeic and ferulic acids, stigmasterol and β–sitosterol has been confirmed; neither rutin nor quercetin were detected. This conflicts with the findings ofKrowlikowska (1967) on E. rostkoviana H ay ne.
