Abstract

Part I

  1. The macroscopical and microscopical characters of the bark of Aspidosperma olivaceum have been described and illustrated.

  2. The dimensions of cork, phellogen, sclereids, cortical and phloem parenchyma, fibres, medullary ray cells, starch and calcium oxalate crystals have been recorded.

  3. The diagnostic characters by which this bark may be identified and distinguished from the other six Aspidosperma barks are tabulated and discussed.

Part II

  1. The numbers of sclereids and numbers of fibres per mg of the powder of A. olivaceum have been counted.

  2. These values are compared with those of the barks of six other species of Aspidosperma previously reported.

  3. The ratio S/F (number of sclereids: number of fibres) represents a constant for the bark of each of the seven species and these values alone are sufficient to distinguish between the barks.
