Sliding-type hiatal hernia is a very common lesion, the pathological significance
of which is very often doubtful. In addition to the radiological examination esophagoscopy
and gastroscopy should be performed in every patient with symptoms suggesting hiatal
hernia. The typical findings in esophagoscopy, gastroscopy with or without inversion,
and peritoneoscopy are demonstrated. The discrepancy between the macroscopic findings
of esophagitis and the histological examination is stressed.
