Abstract
Fractionation of the extract of an Oriental medicine „ogi”, Astragalus membranaceus roots, was performed monitored by the hypotensive activity against the urethane anesthetized rat to afford γ–aminobutyric acid as the active principle. The hypotensive activity of various preparations of the crude drug „ogi”, the roots of Astragalus spp. and Hedysarum spp., showed a good correlation with the content of ?-aminobutyric acid.
