Abstract

A review of recent work on Papaver bracteatum is presented as this plant may well be a significant source of medicinal opiates in the future. The taxonomic, agricultural and phytochemical problems involved in attempting to bring this wild plant into commercial cultivation are discussed. Reference is also made to other possible plant sources of opiates.
