The high valtrat/isovaltrat content is characteristic for this species. Extraction and work–up of the drug results in partial conversion of isovaltrat into homobaldrinal. On this basis a differentiation is possible between Valeriana preparations from the mexicana variety and other species having a different percentage composition of valtrat/isovaltrat.
