Abstract
The basic structural characteristics of the mucilages from Opuntia aurantiaca, O. brasiliensis, Notocactus concinus and Wigginsia arechavaletai were determined. As is known for Cactaceae mucilages, they are formed by arabinose, galactose, rhamnose and galacturonic acid, with less amounts of xylose. They represent structures intermediate between pectins and gum exudates.
