Abstract

The effect of 50 % ethanolic and benzene extracts of E. ribes Burm. on oestrous cycle depends upon the dose and duration of treatment. Both the extracts have exhibited oestrous cycle disturbing activity (ECDA). 60 % and 70 % of rats exhibited extended cornified stage of vaginal smears when 50 % ethanolic extract was administered at 75 and 150 mg/kg doses for 18 and 12 days respectively. The duration of estrus stage also increased significantly in the same order (vs. control P <C 0.001). Similarly, benzene extract prolonged the oestrus state in 50 % rats when administered at 75 mg/kg for 18 days. The duration of oestrus phase increased to greater or lesser extent at every dose of benzene extract (vs. respective control P< 0.001 and < 0.02). Dose 300 mg/kg of this extract was toxic. Of the two extracts, 50 % ethanolic extract is more potent. The results suggested the oestrogenic nature of the extract.
