Recommend Article Abstract PDF Download Buy Article Abstract Purified polysaccharide from seeds of Strychnos potatorum isolated by extraction with alkali is composed of galactose and mannose in a molar ratio of 11:1. Periodate oxidation showed a consumption of 0.93 moles of periodate with liberation of 0.1 moles of formic acid per anhydrohexose unit. Periodate oxidation of the polysaccharide followed by borohydride reduction and acid hydrolysis yielded threitol, glycerol and some unoxidised galactose approximately in a ratio of 10:1:1. Based on these results and methylation studies, the structural features of the polysaccharide are discussed.
