Summary
In 358 patients a blind esophageal biopsy was performed. There were no major complications compared with the riskless blind gastrobiopsy. The esophagobiopsy technique should be used whenever the clinical symptoms like retrosternal pains or heart burn point to a diffuse alteration of the esophageal mucosa. Therefore a histological proof of a suspected esophagitis is absolutely indicated whenever a patient is supposed to undergo surgery because of esophagitis-symptoms.
