Summary

Recent data are reviewed on interaction of injected kynurenines with serotonine and its precursors, tryptamine, noradrenaline and amphetamine in mice and rats. Although kynurenines differ from each other in their neurotropic activity, they as a whole possess marked serotonine and tryptamine negative action and slight noradrenaline and dopamine positive action. Probable implications of these effects of kynurenines in the biochemistry of depression and in the action of antidepressants are briefly discussed.
