Abstract

1. Basic Tris, perfused in dogs at a constant rate during 60 minutes, determines the following modifications: a hypoglycemia proportional to the load injected; a marked increment in glucose utilization; a slight increase in plasma IRI; a drop in FFA concentration followed by a rebound; and a decrease in TAA concentration.
2. These acute changes are transient and can only be observed with doses higher than those used in current therapy.
3. The increment in glucose uptake could account for the hypoglycemia.
4. The slight insulin extra-secretion seems to be due to a side-effect of the drug and not to a direct action on the pancreas.
5. The effects on FFA and TAA may be related to the insulin extra secretion.
