Abstract

Eluates from affected and unaffected skin areas of male and female psoriatics were assayed for DHEA as well as other C19-steroids. It could be demonstrated that eluates from psoriatic lesions contained considerably less DHEA, androsterone and etiocholanolone, whereas the concentration of androstenediol and androstenetriol was found to be significantly increased. From these results it was concluded that the high metabolic activity in the pentosephosphate cycle of the psoriatic epidermis is caused by insufficient inhibition of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase due to low DHEA levels.
