Abstract

Continuous determinations of growth hormone, insulin and parameters of acid base balance have been performed in critically ill infants and those surviving in order to define the moment of previously described increase of GH concentration before death. The regular occurrence of this behavior in all dying infants was unrelated to changes of acid base balance, glucose, insulin and temperature. A concomitant increase of glycerol and decrease of pO2 was observed. The GH changes may be typical of dissociated cardiac and respiratory arrest, the latter occurring usually some time earlier in infants of this age.
