Abstract
Administration of 40 mg carbimazole or 500 mg perchlorate to twelve normal subjects gave an increase in plasma inorganic iodine and urinary iodide excretion. The increase in the amount of extracellular fluid and urinary iodide was almost 4 times the absolute iodide uptake by the thyroid. It appears that perchlorate and carbimazole act not only in blocking thyroid iodide uptake but also in accelerating thyroidal iodide release. So both of these drugs can be used for the plasma inorganic iodine increase test which appreciates thyrotropic function.
