Objectives: To establish a reference range of thyroid binding globulin (TBG) values in normal fetuses and their mothers during pregnancy in Nigerian women.

Methods: Cross sectional analysis of blood samples collected from n=65 fetal cord samples between 13 and 40 weeks of gestation, and n=68 maternal blood samples between 12 and 40 weeks were performed using Elisa Kits, (Diagnostic Laboratories, Webster, Texas / USA), after separation, centrifugation and storage at –20 0C for thyroid binding globulin (TBG). For statistical analysis Student “t“ test and Wilcoxin test were used.

Result: There were significantly gradual increase of thyroid globulin level both in fetal cord and maternal blood as pregnancy advances (p<0.05)

Conclusion: This study confirms previous report that TBG level increases both in fetal cord and maternal blood as pregnancy advances.
