The present investigation describes the isolation and structure elucidation of three pentasaccharides and two tetrasaccharides of jalapinolic acid from the resin glycosides of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam), the novels batatinosides II-VI. A combination FAB-MS and NMR was used to elucidate the structural complexity of these polymers. The sweet potato, colloquially called „camote“ in México, is an important food crop, which has been cultivated for over 2000 years for its edible tubers in Mesoamerica. It has been reported that the leaves and roots are effective in the treatment of leukemia, anemia, hypertension, diabetes and hemorrhage [1]. Molecules like batatinosides have proved powerful antimicrobial and cytotoxic effects of possible therapeutic interest for the development of new anticancer drugs [2].
